A Simple Way to Check Your Water
SCIENTIFIC CONTEXT
What Does a TDS Reading Tell You?
TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids — measuring the aggregate concentration of dissolved minerals, salts, and inorganic compounds in water in Parts Per Million (PPM).
PPM Scale Reference Guide
Standard water testing spectrum recognized by drinking water standards.
0–50
Pure / Ideal
Micro-filtered, reverse osmosis, or distilled water with minimal mineral content.
- RECOMMENDED
50–150
Excellent
Typical sweet spot for balanced domestic drinking water and natural mineral content.
150–250
Good Mineral
Acceptable mineral drinking water. Common for natural spring sources.
250–400
Fair / Hard
Higher mineral presence; typical of unfiltered municipal or deep groundwater.
400+
High TDS
High dissolved solids concentration. Water filtration or audit recommended.
Scientific Note: A digital TDS meter quantifies electrical conductivity generated by dissolved mineral ions and salts (such as calcium, magnesium, and chlorides). It is intended as an everyday water monitoring tool and does not test for bacteria, pathogens, or organic chemicals.
